How to play
SynAPPsium rules & scoring
SynAPPsium gives you a blank box instead of four choices. You write the answer the way you would say it out loud, and it is read and judged properly — so knowing a thing and recognizing a thing stop being the same score.

Setting up

Pick who is playing
Play solo, or hand the device to a second player in Spot a Friend Mode — the app holds more than one player on a device, each with their own progress.

Choose a subject, or let the app choose
Pick one of the twenty subjects and stay in it, or run Crosstrain mode and take a different subject on every single question. Crosstrain is the harder of the two by some distance, because you never get to settle into a topic.

Set the length
A daily set is ten questions by default, which you can change to anything that suits you. When it is finished the app stops — it does not offer you “just one more”, send a notification tomorrow, or keep a streak that punishes you for missing a day.
A turn, start to finish
A round is a set of questions, and every turn in it is the same four steps.

Read the question and type your answer
There are no options to choose from. You get a box and you write what you think the answer is, in whatever words you would use if somebody asked you across a table.

Ask for it to be checked
Nothing is sent while you type. The question and your answer go off to be graded only when you press the button, and nothing else goes with them.

See what was wanted
Right or wrong, you see the answer that was being looked for. A miss is not a dead end — the question goes back in the deck and comes round again another day.

Stop when the set is done
When the last question of your set is answered the app stops. No endless feed, no next level unlocked by nagging.
Ways to play
Solo practice
One player, one subject, ten questions by default. Set the length wherever you like — there is no clock and nothing to keep up.
Spot a Friend Mode
One or two players pass the device and answer the same question head to head. Both answers are judged on their own merit, and the higher score after the set wins.
Crosstrain mode
Random categories on every question, so you never settle into one subject. The harder way to play, and the better test of what you actually know.
How a written answer gets judged
Accepting typed answers is the whole point of the app and also the hardest part of building it, because the same correct answer can be written a dozen ways.
The same answer in different words
The app holds a written table of answers that mean the same thing. Thigh bone is femur. Collarbone is clavicle. Windpipe is trachea. Both forms are right and neither is treated as a lucky guess.
Typing is not the subject
A misspelling that clearly means the right thing is accepted. So are British spellings, a missing “the”, and extra words around a correct answer. You are being asked about Anatomy, not about your keyboard.
Tolerant, but not useless
Being generous is easy; being generous without waving through wrong answers is the difficult half. The tolerance rules live in a single file that both graders read, so the app cannot be lenient in one mode and strict in another.
It will still sometimes get it wrong
Automated grading is not a person, and it occasionally marks a good answer wrong or a poor one right. SynAPPsium is a practice tool, not an examiner.
A small request about the answer box: please type the answer, and nothing about yourself. That box is the only place in SynAPPsium where you can write freely and the only text that goes off the device. There is never any need to put a full name, a school, an address, or anyone's contact details in it.
Scoring
- One point per correct answer. Answers are marked right or wrong — there is no partial credit and no bonus for speed.
- Your set score is out of the number of questions you chose. Ten by default, so a typical set reads as something out of ten.
- Spot a Friend Mode scores both players separately. Both players answer the same questions head to head, both answers are judged on their own merit, and the higher total after the set wins.
- Missed questions return to the deck. So your score reflects what you can recall today, not a permanent record.
Where your work lives
- On the device, and nowhere else. Your progress, your settings and the name you chose are stored on the device you are using. There is no copy on a server, because there is no server holding player records at all.
- Moving to a new device. The app writes a plain backup file that you keep and move yourself. There is no sign-in step and no sync to wait for.
- Purchases are not in the file. A backup carries progress, settings and your chosen name — never purchases. Those belong to your store account and the store restores them.
- Nothing to ask us to delete. Removing the app takes your data with it, because that was the only copy — we never held one to erase.
Still wondering
- Can it be used without a connection?
- Yes, apart from checking a typed answer. Everything else — choosing subjects, reading questions, settings, history, statistics — works with no connection.
- Can two people share one device?
- Yes. The app holds more than one player on a device, each with their own progress, and Spot a Friend Mode puts two of them on the same question at once, revealing both answers together.
- What do the expansion sets change?
- They add subjects and questions. They never add or remove a feature, and they never take away anything that was working before.
