An educational flashcard game

SynAPPsium

Most quiz apps give you four choices and let you guess. SynAPPsium gives you a blank box. You write the answer the way you would say it out loud, and it gets read and judged properly — so knowing a thing and recognizing a thing stop being the same score.

No accounts, no advertisements, and nothing collected about you.

Questions, answered

What is SynAPPsium?

An educational flashcard game with a blank answer box instead of four choices. You write the answer the way you would say it out loud, and it gets graded properly.

How does the grading work?

Capitalization is ignored, a number counts whether you type 6 or six, and a phonetically close misspelling still counts. The correct answer is always shown afterward. All of it runs on your device — nothing is sent anywhere.

What are the game modes?

Spot a Friend Mode for one or two players taking turns, and Crosstrain mode, which mixes random categories together instead of staying in one subject.

What do I get for free?

The Core Pack — nine full categories: U.S. States, American History, Biology, Math, English & Literature, How-To & Life Skills, Mythology & Legends, Sports & Athletics and Geography. Free forever, and it never narrows.

What do the purchases add?

A one-time Full App purchase unlocks Crosstrain mode, Spot a Friend Mode and the Statistics screen — no new categories. Expansion Pack 1 then adds six categories and Expansion Pack 2 adds five, in that order. All one-time purchases, prices shown live in the stores.

Is there a subscription?

No. Every purchase is one-time. No subscriptions, no advertisements, no accounts and no trackers.

Where do I see the price?

In the App Store and Google Play before you buy, since pricing varies by country and currency.

Why a blank box changes the answer

Four options tell you what the answer looks like. Recognition is a much weaker thing than recall, and a multiple-choice score quietly measures the weaker one. A blank box measures whether the answer is actually in your head.

Your words, not ours

Write “thigh bone” and the app knows you meant the femur. Spelling slips, extra words, a missing “the,” British spellings and everyday names for formal terms are all accepted — the question was about anatomy, not typing.

Wrong is not the end

When an answer misses, you see the answer that was wanted rather than a red cross and silence. The question stays in the deck.

Nothing to keep up

Ten questions to start with, about a bus ride. No fragile streak, nothing nagging you, and no notification arriving to guilt you back in.

A round, start to finish

  1. 1

Choose a subject, or run Crosstrain

Stay in one of the twenty subjects, or switch on Crosstrain mode and take a different subject on every question. Crosstrain is much the harder of the two.

  2. 2

Read the question and type your answer

There are no options to pick from. You get a blank box and write what you think the answer is, in the words you would use across a table.

  3. 3

Ask for it to be checked

Nothing is sent while you type. The question and your answer go off to be graded only when you press the button, and nothing else goes with them.

  4. 4

    See what was wanted

Right or wrong, you see the answer that was being looked for. A miss is not a dead end — the question goes back in the deck for another day.

  5. 5

Stop when the set is done

A daily set is ten questions by default, and you can move that number anywhere. No streak to break, no nagging notification.

Nothing leaves your device

Your question and answer are graded right on your phone or tablet. No text is sent to a server, no artificial-intelligence service is called, and no network request is made while you play. Nothing that identifies you leaves the app — not any name you chose, not your history, not your contact details.

Local grading is not a person and occasionally gets it wrong. SynAPPsium is a practice tool, not an examiner.

What is in it

SynAPPsium is free to download. The Core Pack — nine full categories — is free forever and always will be. A one-time Full App purchase unlocks Crosstrain mode, Spot a Friend Mode and the Statistics screen, and two expansion packs add the remaining eleven categories, in order. Nothing is a subscription and nothing you can already do gets taken away.
